آیت‌الله هادی معرفت در کربلا متولد شد و تحصیلات حوزوی‌اش را در حوزه‎های علمیه کربلا، نجف و قم گذراند و سپس در کنار فقه و اصول، توان خود را در تفسیر و علوم قرآن گذارد. وی صاحب آثار ارزشمندی در حوزه علوم قرآنی و تفسیر در میان شیعیان است و کتاب‌هایی از ایشان به یادگار مانده که از آن‌ها می‌توان به مجموعه ده‌جلدی التمهید، صیانة القرآن من التحریف و التفسیر و المفسرون اشاره کرد. این عالم بزرگوار 29 دی‌ماه ۱۳۸۵ درگذشت و پیکرش در حرم حضرت معصومه به خاک سپرده شد.
